Problem 1 (4 points): Read Chapter 18 of the textbook. Then read about Dr. Cynthia Breazeal's work in the area of social learning for robots (see webpage). Describe both the "Learning by Tutelage" and "Learning by Imitation" projects in terms of the components to be learned, the feedback available to the robot, and the type of learning used (supervised, unsupervised, or reinforcement).
Note: The original wording was incorrect. I had originally described the first project as "Socially Guided Learning" which actually encompasses both. If your answer referred to the original wording, then I graded your answer according to that wording.
In the "Learning by Tutelage" project Leo was taught new concepts and skills (components to be learned) by an instructor in a tightly coupled interaction loop. The instructor can provide feedback through a restricted form of natural language and direct operations on the same objects that Leo is asked to manipulate. The type of learning is supervised.
The goal of the "Learning by Imitation" project is to enable Leo to perceive the similarities between himself or herself and others. In this project Leo learns to imitate facial expressions (the learned component). I do not recall reading about any form of supervisory feedback in this project which leads me to classify it as unsupervised. As Breazeal's work is widely known it is possible that students found material that I did not. So no one lost points for disagreeing with me, provided that their conclusion (supervised versus reinforcement versus unsupervised) was supported by their comments on the feedback provided.
Problem 2 (6 points):
Deferred grading to Assignment 7 unless this assignment was turned in complete and on time, in which case it was worth 9 out of 6 points.
