I was turned on to the sax by the excellent music of David Sanborn, and in particular his CD "another Hand." That was my first Jazz CD, and since then I've been a great fan of Jazz, and now the Blues. After listening to the pieces on "another Hand" I just felt compelled to learn how to play the sax. It wasn't until Fall '94 that I took my first lesson in music from Valerie Brand-Gillespie and later bought my first horn, a 1964 Buescher Eb Alto. In my opinion David Sanborn's album "Pearls" is perhaps the best CD he's released since "another Hand." It's amazing to me that of all the David Sanborn music that is heard on the radio (and sometimes elevators!) none of it is from these two CDs (except perhaps the title song from Pearls, since Sade's version was quite well known). I guess the best place for this would be the "Quiet Storm" with Al Santana on the old 95.7FM - anyone remember that late night show?

Lately, though, the tenor sax seems very appealing to me - Joshua Redman is one of the finest young tenor saxophonists of our time. I also admire the works of the early masters such as John Coltrane, Charlie "Bird" Parker and Sonny Rollins. And if you haven't heard this one yet, do it: Clarence Clemons' "Peacemaker" - the most moving and soulful sound to be made by a tenor.

Talking about soulful, Sade is one of my favorites...and if anyone has heard Fiona Apple's song Shadowboxer then you might agree that she, at such a young age, is capable of giving Sade a run for her money...the only thing missing from Fiona's music...HORNS!!!

I'd like to play with, and learn from other saxophonists in the area... get in touch with me!

If you have sheet music to "Abide with me," or "My one and only love" please let me know!
