The CSE Volunteers are a group of Computer Science and Engineering undergraduate and graduate students who volunteer their time and talent to the School District of Hillsborough County. The volunteer students work with the Hillsborough Country Instructional Information and Technology Division staff. Our students get hands-on experience in managing large-scale IT operations. The schools get much needed technical support to help maintain their classroom IT operations. We think that this is a great win-win proposition! This program began in fall 2004 and is now in its eigth semester in spring 2008. Through the end of fall 2007 we have had over 80 student volunteers in over 25 different schools. The total volunteering time completed is about 5000 hours (this is equal to 2.5 person years). In past semesters we have had a special focus on East Tampa schools. We are now recruiting students for the fall 2008 semester.

The original presentation made to Hillsborough County in July 2004 to propose this program is here.

A December 2004 USF press release about CSE Volunteers is here. An article that appeared in the Winter 2006 issue of the USF Engineer magazine is here. A research paper that appeared in the ACM SIGCSE conference in Houston, Texas in March 2006 is here (and the PowerPoint presentation is here).

In December 2006, USF was notified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching that it had been selected for the Community Engagement Classification (here). The USF press release for this is here. Significantly, CSE Volunteers was one of 20 USF programs listed in the application for this classification.
