Housing and Facilities Information

1. Housing

Housing will be provided for in on campus housing, Magnolia Apartments. These apartments are within walking distance of all the buildings that will house the REU.

Magnolia apartment consists two different types of apartments: 3 bedrooms with 1 bathroom, or 4 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms. Each bedroom is equipped with a single bed, desk, chair, small dresser, and closet. Please notice that a mattress and a mattress pad are provided, but no linens. Campus residents have access to 53 channels, including MTV, ESPN, the major networks, a residence hall movie channel, and the Residence Services Network-a video bulletin board which keeps students up to date on campus events. Be aware that no TV set is provided.

Computer Labs
A computer lab for all resident students, complete with word processing, spread sheet, and internet browser software will be located in the Magnolia Complex.

Computer Connections
Ethernet connections for access to the Internet and University computing services are provided in all student rooms.  Using the Ethernet connection requires specialized hardware and software for your computer. Your computer must be IBM compatible, Pentium class or higher, with 16k memory, and run Windows 95/98/ME or NT 4. You will also need to have an Ethernet card (provided by the resident) installed on you computer. Macintosh users will need to provide appropriate hardware and software for Ethernet connections. In any room, student who wish to do so may also access the Internet and University computing services via modem (provided by the resident). There is no additional charge for the Ethernet/Internet access.

Telephone
Local phone service is provided in each bedroom at no additional charge. Students provide their own telephones; information about long distance calling services is provided in the room assignment package.

Mail
Mail is delivered to each resident's mail box in each of the three complexes Monday through Saturday with the exception of holidays. Each student or family will have their own mailbox. The mail format is as follows:

Tampa, FL 33620

Laundry
A Laundry room will be located in the Magnolia Community building which will include coin operated washers and dryers, ironing board, and folding tables.

2. Facilities

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering will provide office and lab space for all students, as well as the necessary equipment to perform the assigned activities. Students will have access to the USF Library, computing facilities, transportation, and recreational facilities.

Students will have access to an Ethernet network of Sun workstations, four PC computer labs, and a multimedia lab containing scanners, color printer, CD-R, digital camera, and general purpose software and specific tools used in engineering. In addition, the USF Department of Computer Science and Engineering operates a research-oriented Fast Ethernet LAN consisting of approximately 100 Sun SPARC and UltraSPARC workstations, several SGI O2 machines, Sun Microsystem Cluster (B1) and numerous Pentium based PCs serviced by a Windows 2000 Advanced server. At the project level, there are more focused labs where professors have specific tools and equipment for their particular research projects, as described in the next section, as they relate to specific research activities in which REU students will participate.

The USF Library system is home to 1.6 million volumes, 11,000 periodicals, and more than 4 million microfilms. The USF Tampa Campus Library serves as the USF Library System’s research center. The USF Library is a state-of-the-art facility with over 300 public access PC’s, open-access student computer labs, an electronic post office, networked teaching labs, wireless access throughout, full-text electronic resources, and the state’s first full-text electronic reserve. LUIS, the on-line catalog, provides access to the other State University System library catalogs and offers 60 databases. These features allow the USF libraries to offer students, faculty, and staff the best possible instruction and research support to assist in their academic achievements.
